What Is a Non-Filer?
Updated: Sep 30, 2024
A non-filer is someone who has unfiled tax returns. While it sounds irresponsible, there are many reasons folks become non-filers: natural disasters, health problems, drowning in debt, including past tax debt, and the list goes on.
Non-filers tend to feel quite guilty for unfiled tax returns, are always “looking over their shoulder” or waiting for “the shoe to drop.” It’s very stressful. Every knock on the door and envelope in the mail is suspected of bad news. Relationships within the family get strained. It’s terrifying to think or know you owe tax and just wait for someone to come and collect.
Many non-filers do not know where to start, so here’s a few things to get started on the path to healing:
1) Gather your documents for the tax years you need to file for
2) If you own a business, get your bookkeeping done for the years that must be filed. You can do this yourself with QuickBooks Online, or hire someone to do it for you.
3) You probably need to order your bank statements to get your bookkeeping done and that can take some time, so get it started.
4) Reach out for help. You don’t have to do this alone. Resolving tax problems are like trying to recover from a major accident. It’s not reasonable to expect yourself to perform your own surgery or sew your own stitches. I’m here to help.
